The jazzy sounds of California’s Subtle Mind became known around the world in 2013 with the release of “Gravitate” (Tuba). The EP earned critical acclaim, being called “forward thinking bass science” by Juno, and “a strong connection between both harmonically and melodically-driven music, and the percussive sound system testing sounds of reggae and dub” by FatKidOnFire. Impressive, considering the then college seniors were collaborating 400 miles apart.
The duo began collaborating in 2010 - Austin was a musician and producer inspired by jazz and hip hop. Paul an active local DJ in the San Francisco Bay Area bass music scene inspired by electronic music. Sometime in 2010, Paul dropped his old alias (Runamok) and the two began working together as Subtle Mind full time.
With both members now living in Los Angeles, Subtle Mind have since released the well-recieved Santa Ana Winds EP on Surfase Records, and “Untitled/Be Easy” on Lutetia Dubz, all of which has been in heavy rotation and received support from the likes of Truth, DJ Chefal, Bunzer0, Joe Nice and Gantz. They’ve played numerous local shows, and took their first international stage at the Outlook Festival in Pula, Croatia. “Gravitate” has been awarded a remix EP featuring the likes of new and internationally established talent, and there’s a fresh batch of original tunes due by summer 2015. It’s all part of a bright future full of innovative music for Subtle Mind.
